Mother of baby found in trash can charged with attempted murder

The baby was found in a trash can on Fairview Drive by a citizen Thursday afternoon.

WILMINGTON -- The mother of a newly-born baby has been charged with first degree attempted murder after the baby was discovered in a trash can, according a Saturday press release from the Wilmington Police Department.

Wilmington police say Maryuri Estefany Calix-Macedo, 21, left her baby in a trash can on Fairview Dr. Thursday afternoon. She was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for assessment and is now being held at the New Hanover County Jail under an $800,000 secured bond.

The baby was discovered by a citizen who was walking her dog in the area and heard his cries. She took quick action and called 911, saving his life, according to Wilmington police.
