Prosecutors in Multnomah County, Oregon, have accused two people of starving and malnourishing their two children over a nearly two-year period.
Mena Kamel, 33, and Marina Zaki, 28, were arrested following an investigation that started when police and medics were called last June to a home after one of the children was injured.
The children are both under 6 years old, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office.
Hospital staff first discovered the children were starving and malnourished, the DA’s office said.
According to the DA’s office, the maltreatment of the children occurred between Sept. 1, 2018 and June 27, 2020.
The children are receiving care to bring them back to full health.
Kamel and Zaki are charged with four counts of first-degree assault and 14 counts of first-degree criminal mistreatment. Their arraignment is scheduled Jan. 20. Read full story
