WOODLAND, Washingon - Woodland Public Schools provides free books to K-4 students through the Reading is Fundamental Program to encourage and motivate younger students to discover their love of reading.

Shae Lindsay serves as the librarian for Woodland Primary School and Woodland Intermediate School where she uses the Reading is Fundamental Program to motivate students to read. "The idea of the program is to get books into kids' hands and encourage reading," she explained.

Woodland's librarians have been using the Reading is Fundamental Program for a few years at the Woodland Intermediate School, however the program was first introduced to the Primary School this fall with the second event taking place in January. At each event, Lindsay reads a book aloud to the students followed by each student having the opportunity to pick any book they want from the program to take home with them.

In January, Lindsay wore a tree costume and read "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein to a group of engaged Kindergarteners and first graders. Following the reading, students from Woodland Middle School's Leadership Class helped the elementary students sign their names in the books they chose. "Students can select any book they want; we try to give them very little direction so they pick the books they're most interested in without being affected by outside influences," explained Lindsay. "The students just love the program and can't get over how they get to keep the book they choose."

Lindsay decided to become a teacher because she has a passion for reading and likes kids. "I wanted to help students who weren't receiving help elsewhere," she said. "I really enjoy working with all of the different kids and getting to know their personalities; you never know what to expect from them so it's always fun and exciting."

Reading is a Fundamental is a national organization with programs working to address the never-ending cycle of illiteracy throughout the United States that suppresses millions of Americans, especially those from low-income communities, from reaching their full potential. Reading is Fundamental has proven that getting good books into the hands of children to read and own makes a huge difference in reading outcomes.
