The number of new cases of Covid-19 rose 28% last week, and an Oregon health official said it was uncertain how the loss of 15 million vaccine doses nationally would affect vaccination plans.

There were 2,456 new cases of Covid reported in the week ended March 28, up from 1,920 in the previous week, according to the Oregon Health Authority's weekly report, released Wednesday.

Also Wednesday, an OHA leader told the Oregonian it may be more difficult for residents to schedule vaccinations in light of news that Johnson & Johnson canceled shipment of 15 million doses because of a lab accident.

"Less vaccine means less appointments for people to be vaccinated," said OHA chief financial officer Dave Baden in the Oregonian.

The state plans to begin vaccinating frontline workers Monday and all adult Oregonians on May 1. Baden said he expected Oregon could meet that timeline but it could be receiving fewer doses than expected.

According to the OHA's weekly report, the number of hospitalizations last week was down slightly, from 139 to 137, and the number of Covid-related death was 10, the lowest weekly total since last June.
