St. Mary's Academy sophomore and flutist Sara Hedberg took first place in this year's District 15 OSAA/OMEA Solo & Ensemble Music Contest. She will go on to compete in the OSAA State Solo Music Championships at Lewis & Clark College on May 4.
Hedberg, a 16-year-old Southwest Portland resident, was among eight St. Mary's musicians competing in the district competition last month. Competing as soloists, sophomore and mezzo-soprano Madison Wray (Southwest Portland) placed third and is a first alternate to advance to the state championships; junior and soprano Samantha Schmiedeskamp (Northwest Portland) placed fourth and is a second alternate for state; junior and soprano Hannah Bryan tied for sixth (Beaverton); and junior and mezzo-soprano Gillian Dockins tied for eighth (Southwest Portland).
In the ensemble division of the district competition, the vocal quartet of Juliet Anderson (junior, Fairview), Charlotte Umanoff (junior, North Portland), Sandra Vance (junior, Newberg) and Wray took first place.
"It is a mix of dedication, passion and rehearsal that results in talent -- it is not something that one is just born with. I'm proud of these young women for putting in the time to learn their craft, prepare their music and proudly represent themselves, our music department and St. Mary's Academy," said Director of Choral Music Kathy Briggs.
Hedberg is a veteran of the OSAA State Solo Music Championships; last year she placed fifth out of 35 flutists. This is her eighth year playing the flute, and she currently studies with Sarah Tiedemann. Hedberg is a member of St. Mary's Marian Instruments Orchestra and the Portland Youth Conservancy Orchestra.
