Earthquake Off Oregon Coast

(Oregon Coast) - The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 4.9 magnitude earthquake off the Oregon coast about 7:53 PST Friday evening. The epicenter was about 255 miles from Yachats, Oregon.

Reports so far indicate no one felt the quake and no tsunami warnings were issued for the Oregon coast, or anywhere else on the west coast of the United States.

BeachConnection.net contacted several coastal residents, including Ian Clayman of Newport and Angi Wildt of Depoe Bay, and no one said they felt anything.

Geophysicist Randy Baldwin says the quake was centered about 330 miles west-southwest of Portland at a depth of six miles - shallow in earthquake terms.

He says quakes of that magnitude are common in that area, part of the Juan de Fuca Plate, and there is no danger of it generatingNo tsunami sirens were activated along the Oregon coast for that event either.
