AFP/File – French actress Juliette Binoche poses during the photocall for the film "Copie Conforme" – French film star Gerard Depardieu's public outburst against his compatriot Juliette Binoche has left her bewildered, the Oscar-winning actress said to British media on Thursday.

"I don't know him and I don't know what I did to him," she said in a video interview on the website of British film magazine Empire, after Depardieu called her an actress who "has nothing, absolutely nothing".

"I understand you don't have to like everyone and you dislike someone's work. But I don't understand the violence" of the statements, the 46-year-old Oscar-winning star of "An English Patient" also said to the BBC.

Binoche and Depardieu, who are among the most popular French film stars on the international stage, have been involved in a public bust up chronicled in the European press since mid-August.

Depardieu, the star of "Cyrano de Bergerac" and "Green Card", sparked the dispute when he told the Austrian newspaper Profil that Binoche was an actress who had "absolutely nothing."

"Please can you explain to me what the secret of this actress is meant to be? I would really like to know why she has been so esteemed for so many years," he said.

Binoche, who is in Britain to promote "Certified Copy" the new film by Iranian Abbas Kiarostami for which she won the Best Actress award at Cannes, said she was not hurt because she did not think the attack was about her.

"He is allowed to not like me as an actress, but I do not understand why he is behaving like this. It is his problem," Binoche said to Empire online.
