At 2100 GMT, Earl was centered some 630 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, which is on string of barrier islands where evacuations have been ordered. The storm was moving northwest at 17 miles per hour. Authorities were expecting Earl to produce heavy winds and surf conditions over much of the eastern seaboard. Behind Earl was Tropical Storm Fiona, which was in the Atlantic with no immediate peril to land areas. Officials said a new storm, named Tropical Storm Gaston, had also developed in the Atlantic some 1,600 miles east of the Lesser Antilles. Follow Yahoo!
